Company Overview
Our client is a global leader in rugged computing solutions, delivering high-reliability laptops, tablets, handheld systems, and edge computing devices for mission-critical environments.
Products are deployed in extreme conditions including military, field operations, industrial automation, transportation, and public safety. Engineering teams must solve complex thermal challenges under constraints such as sealed chassis, fanless design, waterproof structures, shock resistance, and wide operating temperature ranges.
This role offers the opportunity to lead thermal architecture decisions for next-generation rugged platforms used worldwide.
Job Summary
The Thermal Engineering Manager will lead system-level thermal architecture development and execution for rugged computing products.
This position goes beyond simulation execution — it requires ownership of thermal system strategy, structural integration, performance validation, and supplier coordination, ensuring reliable operation under extreme environmental conditions.
The role includes technical leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and vendor management.
Responsibilities
- Define and lead system-level thermal architecture for rugged laptops, tablets, and handheld systems
- Develop thermal design strategies under constraints such as sealed enclosures, IP-rated housings, and shock/vibration environments
- Drive thermal simulation activities using tools such as FloTHERM, ensuring correlation between simulation and physical validation
- Conduct and oversee thermal efficiency testing, reliability validation, and root-cause analysis for thermal issues
- Integrate mechanical structure, materials, heat spreaders, heat pipes, vapor chambers, and airflow solutions
- Lead new thermal technologies and materials evaluation and implementation
- Conduct design reviews and guide Creo-based mechanical integration decisions
- Manage thermal-related supplier selection, evaluation, and performance improvement
- Collaborate with ME, EE, and system teams to ensure optimal power/thermal balance
- Mentor engineers and manage project execution timelines
Requirements
- Master’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of system-level thermal architecture leadership experience
- Proven experience managing rugged or constrained thermal environments
- Strong hands-on expertise in FloTHERM or equivalent CFD tools
- Experience conducting design reviews and working with Creo or equivalent CAD platforms
- Solid understanding of heat transfer, airflow, conduction, radiation, and material thermal properties
- Experience managing vendors and introducing new materials or thermal technologies
- Good English communication skills
Preferred Background
- Experience in rugged notebooks, industrial PCs, military devices, or sealed computing systems
- Exposure to fanless design or IP-rated enclosure thermal solutions
- Experience with heat pipes, vapor chambers, graphite sheets, and advanced TIM materials
