Company Overview
Our client is a leading technology company developing connected hardware and cloud-based solutions for residential and commercial properties worldwide.
The company’s product portfolio includes smart cameras, video doorbells, sensors, access control devices, automation modules, and other connected-home products. Its Taiwan hardware team works closely with the US headquarters and manufacturing partners across Asia to develop next-generation consumer electronics products from concept through mass production.
This role offers the opportunity to take full ownership of product mechanical development while also providing technical leadership and mentorship to an experienced mechanical engineering team in Taiwan.
Job Summary
The Lead Mechanical Engineer will independently own the mechanical development of new connected-home products from initial concept through manufacturing.
This is a dual-impact role combining hands-on product design with technical leadership. You will lead mechanical architecture and detailed design, drive prototypes and engineering validation, support tooling and manufacturing execution, and mentor senior mechanical engineers within the Taiwan office.
You will also serve as the primary mechanical engineering interface between the US headquarters, the Taiwan development team, and ODM and manufacturing partners across Asia.
The ideal candidate is a highly capable hands-on engineer who can manage complex product assemblies, make sound engineering decisions, and guide teams through fast-paced consumer electronics development cycles.
Responsibilities
- Independently lead the mechanical development of consumer electronics products from concept and industrial design intent through detailed design, prototyping, validation, and mass production.
- Define product mechanical architecture and manage complex, multi-part 3D CAD assemblies.
- Maintain robust design intent, part relationships, configuration control, and revision discipline throughout the development lifecycle.
- Build mock-ups and functional prototypes to evaluate concepts, verify fit and function, and accelerate design iterations.
- Plan and manage simulations, engineering analysis, and design risk assessments.
- Evaluate design options and justify technical decisions against product, reliability, manufacturing, cost, and schedule requirements.
- Work closely with Industrial Design to balance product appearance with optical, acoustic, RF, usability, reliability, environmental, and manufacturing requirements.
- Design and optimize components for plastic injection molding, die casting, over-molding, liquid silicone rubber molding, compression molding, two-shot molding, CNC machining, sheet metal, die-cut, and stamping processes.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and resolve DFM, DFA, and DFX issues.
- Produce manufacturing-ready 2D drawings with complete dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, materials, finishes, colors, and process requirements.
- Prepare preliminary and detailed BOMs, RFQ packages, engineering specifications, and design documentation.
- Document engineering decisions, technical assumptions, calculations, simulations, risks, and mitigation plans.
- Work directly with tooling vendors, component suppliers, ODMs, and manufacturing partners across Asia.
- Drive tooling development, part quality, trial builds, and issue resolution through EVT, DVT, and PVT.
- Serve as the mechanical engineering hub across Industrial Design, Optics, Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, RF, Quality, and Manufacturing teams.
- Conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance and mentorship to senior mechanical engineers.
- Help establish and maintain mechanical design standards, development processes, and engineering best practices.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least 6 years of mechanical design experience, with significant experience in consumer electronics.
- Demonstrated ability to independently take products from concept through mass production.
- Strong 3D CAD skills with experience managing complex, large assemblies; Creo experience is strongly preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of plastic injection molding, die casting, over-molding, silicone molding, compression molding, two-shot molding, CNC machining, sheet metal, die-cut, and stamping processes.
- Proven experience with tolerance stack-up analysis, GD&T, DFM, DFA, and DFX.
- Experience producing manufacturing-ready 2D drawings, BOMs, RFQ packages, and complete engineering documentation.
- Experience working directly with tooling vendors, suppliers, ODMs, and manufacturing partners in Asia.
- Strong cross-functional experience with Industrial Design, Optics, Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, RF, Quality, and Manufacturing teams.
- Ability to work independently, manage technical risks, and drive product development with minimal supervision.
- Technical maturity and leadership capability to mentor and guide experienced engineers.
- Professional working proficiency in both English and Chinese.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience developing smart cameras, IP cameras, video doorbells, or similar connected-home devices.
- Experience with outdoor consumer electronics, including waterproofing, dust protection, thermal management, and environmental durability.
- Experience integrating lenses, optical modules, microphones, speakers, antennas, and RF components into compact consumer products.
- Experience working in fast-paced consumer electronics development cycles.
- Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Lead, or junior people manager.
- Familiarity with CMF, cosmetic quality, gap and flush control, user interaction, and product feel.
- Experience with reliability validation such as drop, vibration, thermal, ingress protection, and environmental testing.
